Hi Joe,
It's been a long time. Your article brings back fond memories of Beau Lake and Dodge City. I vaguely remember a time when a moose urinated on your father's tent in the early morning hours when we were all sleeping. As you know, my father is Robert (Buzz) Barry. Those were the best times of my life.

Merry Xmas

Joe -

As a fellow writer, I know your pain (I write about software development over at TechRepublic)! This is actually the exactly reason I started writing an application to help folks like me and you find the people who rip off our content. It's currently in public beta, I'd love for you to check it out and give me some feedback on it. You can find it at: http://ratcatcher.titaniumcrowbar.com and please feel free to email me at justinjames [at] titaniumcrowbar dot com with your feedback, questions, etc.

Thanks!

"I don’t understand why that list in aggregate condemns a generation?"

Oh I don't think the list condemns Gen Y at all. My criticism is for the Boomers: http://www.joewilcox.com/2005/05/01/the-lost-generation/

Millennials are pretty straightforward about what they believe, unlike Boomers, who espoused one set of ideals while living by another set.

The first time I heard the Beatles was from my mom's vinyl. I've 'stolen' every single Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Hendrix album off the internet since then. I would do it again. Why? I don't believe in lining the pockets of record company execs in exchange for my access to art. Some people are dead, and their art should be replicated world wide. Should I have to pay a nickel to see the Mona Lisa online?

If you are going to argue that they are people who deserve income for their labors, I would retort that they still make money from concerts, movies, books, TV, etc.

They [Gen X] feel “special”
They’re “sheltered” by parents
The feel “confident”—empowered
They are “team-oriented” in actions/decisions
They are “conventional” in attitudes about intolerance
They feel “pressured” to succeed or to take certain actions
They make “achieving” a priority, which is reinforced by peer groups

I could argue against a couple of those, but its actually just about spot on. However, I don't understand why that list in aggregate condemns a generation?

"Boomers make decisions based on data and facts"
-I disagree, but maybe I just don't know the right elderly folk.

p.s. i think the best Beatles song is Rockey Raccoon.

p.p.s. the new kanye is actually pretty good too. Includes a ~30 minute video short, very entertaining.

Nice of the Economist to include for free...I think there should be subscription options for both print and iPad, with a small premium to get both. I like reading Wired, and understand the extra work that is required to put the digital version together....so I don't think it should be free with a regular print version, but it also shouldn't cost $5 an issue.

So how many issues per year does the New Yorker publish? That piece of info would make the cost comparisons a bit more clear.

Adding to that list of Gen Y primers, it's worth having a look at this report from Edelman:
